Pap Smears & Cervical Cancer Screening
A Pap smear collects a small sample of cells from the cervix to look for abnormal or precancerous cell changes.
Depending on your age and medical history, cervical cancer screening may include:
• Pap testing
• High-risk HPV testing
• Pap + HPV co-testing
• Follow-up of a previous abnormal Pap or HPV result
Dr. Saunders will recommend the appropriate screening based on your age, previous results, medical history and current screening guidelines.
Your Pap Smear May Already Be Included in Your Visit
Comprehensive Annual Gynecology Exam
When you are due for cervical cancer screening, your Pap smear can be performed as part of your comprehensive annual gynecological examination at no additional physician visit charge.
Hormone Balancing & Restoration Follow-Up
Established patients seeing Dr. Saunders for Hormone Balancing & Restoration may also be able to have cervical cancer screening performed during an appropriate in-office follow-up when due.
Ask our office when scheduling so we can determine whether your Pap smear can be incorporated into your upcoming appointment.
Laboratory/pathology charges are separate from the physician visit.

• Review of your cervical and gynecological history
• Review of previous Pap and HPV results
• Discussion of previous abnormal cervical findings
• Review of relevant risk factors
• Appropriate pelvic examination
• Cervical examination
• Pap smear when indicated
• HPV testing when appropriate
• Evaluation of cervical symptoms or concerns
• Discussion of recommended screening intervals
• Personalized follow-up recommendations
• Additional testing or specialist referral when indicated

Repeat Pap Smear — $75
If Dr. Saunders recommends repeating a Pap smear after a previous test or as part of an established treatment/follow-up plan, a focused repeat Pap appointment may be available.
Your Repeat Pap Visit Includes:
• Brief review of your previous result
• Focused cervical examination
• Repeat cervical specimen collection
• Appropriate laboratory submission
• Follow-up recommendations based on the results
$75 Repeat Pap Smear Visit
(Receipts and invoices provided to submit for reimbursement from HSA/FSA and Insurances)
Designed for established patients when a repeat Pap has already been recommended. It is not a substitute for a comprehensive gynecological evaluation when one is medically necessary.
Your Visit Is Self-Pay — Your Pap Laboratory Testing May Be Covered by InsuranceAlthough your physician visit with Dr. Saunders is self-pay, the laboratory and pathology processing of your Pap smear and HPV testing may be covered by your health insurance, depending on your individual plan.
When applicable, specimens may be sent to an appropriate participating laboratory so you can use your insurance benefits.
When Should You Schedule a Cervical Health Evaluation?
Don't wait for your next routine screening if you're experiencing concerning gynecological symptoms.
Schedule an evaluation if you experience:
• Bleeding between periods
• Bleeding after intercourse
• Bleeding after menopause
• Unusual or persistent vaginal discharge
• Pelvic pain
• Pain during intercourse
• A previous abnormal Pap or HPV result
• Another new or concerning gynecological symptom
These symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily mean cervical cancer, but they should be appropriately evaluated.
What to Expect During Your Pap SmearA Pap smear typically takes only a few minutes.
During the examination, a speculum is gently placed into the vagina so Dr. Saunders can visualize the cervix. A small brush or collection device is then used to obtain cervical cells.
The specimen is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Once your results are available, our office will provide appropriate follow-up recommendations.
