GLP-1 MEDICATIONS
These medications are science backed FDA approved pen injectors administered subcutaneously (under the skin)
The FDA-approved prescription weight loss injection. Wegovy is a weekly, self-administered injection used for the treatment of chronic weight management in adults with obesity. Wegovy works by mimicking a hormone that targets the area of your brain that regulates appetite, with studies showing that the drug helped people lose up to 15% of their body weight when used in combination with diet and exercise.
To qualify for Wegovy, you must be over the age of 18 and meet the following requirements:
- Have a BMI of 30 or greater, or
- Have a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.
Ozempic and Trulicity are both GLP-1 medications. These once weekly pen injectors are effective at lowering blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. Both medications are very effective for weight loss but is not FDA approved as weight loss medications
Saxenda is a daily self-administered subcutaneous GLP-1 injection which is used for treating type 2 diabetes since 2010. In 2014, it was approved by the FDA to treat obesity and weight management with a 3 mg daily dose. This is about twice the amount prescribed when used for treatment of Diabetes.
Currently approved obesity medications include: orlistat, phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), and naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave)
